Layout & Animation Rig Genric Question

I’ve always worked in studios where they used specific assets for layout and animation with different rigging setup for performance issues.
Have you ever worked in a place where they used the same asset ? How to you make sure the setup is fast enough to keep the scene light and fast in layout and yet you could animate it later when you are in the animation step ?

I was thinking about a rig where you could block node behavior in Maya so some nodes wouldn’t compute in layout mode.
