Common Portfolio Feedback for Recent Grads

@dhruv: So just because I’ve been giving portfolio reviews to some recent grads going into Art and Tech Art…Just students who hit me up on email for feedback.
here are the common things I’m seeing that I wonder if people wanted to add to so I can have a list somewhere to put up:

• Discoverability: A lot of folks haven’t set up their LinkedIn, portfolio pages etc… IMHO I should be able to find you in a google search, and your portfolio should come up before your social media profiles.
• Portfolios: a lot of these students don’t show the right content on their portfolios. it’s either they put everything on which includes a lot of crud, or nothing. IMHO a portfolio is a sales pitch, and it’s about what you put on as much as what you leave off. This applies to Github as well…make anything you’re not proud of Private.
• Pitch Speed: A portfolio needs to sell you right away, best stuff first, then second best and end with the third best. Don’t make it too fast or too slow if it’s a video. Put some music in to time the edits to, and then remove the music if you want.
• Research: A lot of students have no ideas what roles or communities exist out there. A lot of these are easy google searches but there’s just a lot of unnecessary “going in blind”. So many students only think of the big name companies and have no idea about the smaller studios around them.
