Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Lead Technical Artist, the Senior Technical Artist is responsible for developing the material pipeline as well as prop building and infrastructure pipelines for the team. The position must be able to provide technical processes, tools, and materials for the game. This person has an understanding of memory and frame budgets, programming and design concerns, understands PBR lighting basics, material authoring, and sets best practices for bug fixing. This person helps implement new production methods to improve the performance and efficiency of team.

Essential Functions:

  • Works closely with Lead Technical Artist and Environment Lead, to keep quality and style consistent across all environments
  • Work with engineers and artists on lighting and shading improvements
  • Shader creation and pipeline set up
  • Strong experience and techniques in creating plants, shrubs, and props
  • Strong worldbuilding chops and firm understanding of composition
  • Good communication skills – able to help others and ask for help when needed; proactive in sharing info and assets
  • Develop custom workflows and tool solutions for the art team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Worked on 2+ games that shipped
  • Experience in Python and the use of PyQt/PySide (additional languages a plus)
  • Advanced understanding of generating normal maps from high poly models.
  • Advanced understanding of complex node based shader networks such as those used in Unreal Editor 4, Substance Designer, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of the game development process
  • Experience creating environments using modular and procedural systems
  • An understanding of effective asset creation and optimization
  • A strong understanding of shader functionality
  • In-depth knowledge and/or experience with PBR
  • Experience creating and tweaking shaders
  • Strong understanding of asset pipelines and agile development environments
  • Understanding of the following:
    • Artist workflows
    • HDR pipeline and color theory
    • Unreal material creation
  • Plus
    • Hard surface modeling experience
    • Experience with photogrammetry or other scanning techniques
    • Experience in architecture, interior or industrial design
    • Houdini experience
    • Unreal VFX experience
    • Machine Learning experience
